We are organising 3 online events to celebrate The World Microbiome Day 2020. These activities will be held between the 22nd and 28th June. Keep reading to learn more!

The World Microbiome Day is an annual event that aims to raise awareness about microbes, or how as some call them, the good bugs that inhabit our ecosystems and, of course ourselves.

The microbial community that lives on and in the human body exerts a crucial role on human metabolism, function and immunity. The beneficial impact of the microbiome on human health is under intensive research, as is demonstrated by the increasing scientific literature published during the last 10 years. Learn more about this topic on our Live therapeutics and microbiome pages.

Due to COVID-19, this year’s event will be fully virtual, thanks to the coordination of APC Microbiome Ireland, with which Atlantia is delighted to be close partners with. The focus theme is “Diversity”, diversity of microbes, microbiome habitats, diets to feed and fuel microbiomes and the diversity among microbiome researchers.

The Atlantia team aims to tackle the importance of diversity in the diet and on microbiome research. Research has showed that a diverse microbiome is also a healthier microbiome. Probiotics and prebiotics could help in modulating our microbiome to obtain health benefits.

Most of the health benefits associated with probiotics have been to maintain a healthy microbiota or to preserve the gut microbiota balance in the defense against pathogens. However specific probiotics may also provide other important health benefits, listed on our probiotics page. Prebiotics are generally dietary fibres with a capacity to promote the growth of potentially beneficial components of the intestinal microflora.

We are organising 3 online events to celebrate this important day. These activities will be held between the 22nd and 28th June:

1.     Microbiome contest: We are organising a probiotic voucher giveaway to spend at our local Probiotic food supplier, My Goodness Cork. They produce fermented probiotic products and attend the main farmers markets around Cork. They also have a stall on the well-known English Market, located on the heart of Cork city. 3 x €25 vouchers will be drawn at our TwitterInstagram and Facebook Accounts.

Supporting the diversity of the local business ecosystem is also important! The winners will be announced through the same Social Media platforms on Monday 29th.  Visit our Terms of promotion to learn more. Stay tuned to win your voucher!

2.     Probiotics and prebiotics Awareness Week Campaign: We will be creating a series of infographics on each day of the week. These will go through some of the different probiotic strains and prebiotic fibres, where to naturally find them and where to buy them. Keep an eye to our social media platforms (TwitterInstagram and Facebook) if you do not want to miss them.

3.     Integrating cutting-edge Technology in Probiotics Research, On-Demand Webinar: Diversity on probiotics research is hugely important. There are many known applications thanks to the work done by many microbiome researchers around the world. However, these applications need to be validated through Human Intervention Studies.

Our CEO, Andrea Doolan, presents this case study of a clinical trial conducted at our Cork facility. We established a clinical challenge model aiming at investigating the ability of the probiotic strain in attenuating and/or reversing deterioration in the healthy human gastrointestinal tract.

This trial was a single-site, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, two-armed, parallel group trial in healthy, adult volunteers. It investigated the effect of daily intake of the probiotic strain or placebo when co-administered with daily intake of 300mg of Aspirin. At Atlantia we are committed to provide the highest quality, scientific support to those companies aiming to bring probiotics and microbiome therapeutics products to market. As a spin out of the APC Microbiome Ireland, Atlantia Food Clinical Trials has extensive experience in conducting microbiome-related clinical studies.

We provide our clients with state-of-the-art microbiome research through all stages of the clinical trial process from design and conduct of the trial right through to the final report. Visit our publications or case study pages to learn more on our recent research.
