Scientific Background

Physical activity, defined as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure, and sport, in which a skilled individual or team actively compete against another or others for entertainment, have long been used as tools to improve health.

WHO defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity’’
Regular and adequate levels of physical activity: improve muscular and cardiorespiratory fitness; improve bone and functional health;

reduce the risk of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes and cancer; reduce the risk of falls as well as hip or vertebral fractures; and is fundamental to energy balance and weight control. Beyond physical health, regular physical activity and sport participation is associated with better mental health outcomes and improved social well-being.
A comprehensive analysis of physical activity and sports performance requires both subjective (self-reported questionnaires) and objective (e.g. lung function by peak expiratory flow (PEF)) assessments

At Atlantia Food Clinical Trials we have extensive experience in conducting clinical trials in physical activity and sports health; from assessing improved physical performance in athletes to individuals engaged in physical work. Our expert research team will work with sponsor(s) to design and conduct a study most suitable for their investigational product(s), agreeing and applying the most suitable measurements and statistically powering studies to ensure that study objectives are achieved and reported. The trials can be designed to assess both single consumption (e.g. sports drink or energy bar) versus long term consumption (e.g. protein for muscle recovery) of IP. Throughout the trial we will utilise our close working relationships with sports medicine experts, exercise physiologists and certified trainers/strength conditioning coaches.

Lung Function / Pulmonary Function Tests (PFT): peak expiratory flow (PEF) assessed using a peak flow meter, forced vital capacity (FVP) and forced expiratory volume (FEV) using a spirometer
Physical Activity & Physical Performance: Jumping height, 1 repetition maximum weight lift (1RM), timed get up and go, chair stand 6 min walking test, stair climb power test, gait speed, flexibility and range of motion, economy of motion, muscle fatigue, acceleration (accelerometer),
Body composition measurements e.g. % lean muscle using DEXA scan; Biometric & Anthropometric Measurements: resting heart rate, blood pressure, weight, muscle circumference
Muscle strength & endurance: Biodex Isokinetic Test measures isokinetic (both eccentric and concentric) function and isometric strength on major muscle groups, handgrip strength (arm curl with hand weight); Endurance Capacity: lactate threshold, multi-sprint endurance
